Two reasons to have a remodelling contractor fit your stone benchtop

Blog

If you've decided to fit a stone benchtop in your kitchen, here are some reasons why it might be better not to do this yourself but to have it done by a remodelling contractor instead.

Stone benchtops are extremely heavy

One reason why the installation of this type of benchtop should be carried out by a contractor is that stone benchtops are some of the heaviest benchtops available and tend to weigh far more than those made of laminate or solid wood. Because of the benchtop's weight, handling and installing it can be quite challenging and there is a greater likelihood of it being damaged, the cabinets onto which it's placed being damaged, or you being hurt during its installation if a remodelling contractor is not involved in this task.

For example, if you and the person you have helping you put the benchtop in place don't elevate it to the same height when lifting it up, the person holding it too low might cause the benchtop to scrape against the edge of the bottom cabinets and leave them marked. Likewise, if you find that you cannot hold the benchtop for more than a few seconds after picking it up, you might drop it, in which case you could find yourself with a chipped benchtop and an injured foot.

A remodelling contractor won't make errors that you, as an inexperienced person, might make and so will not cause damage to the kitchen features or injure anyone when they do this work. They'll know how many labourers they'll need to help them put it into place and will be able to work in tandem with those assisting them to ensure the benchtop is lifted smoothly, quickly and carefully, in a way that results in it not scraping against any cabinets or being dropped.

A remodelling contractor will be better able to cut the benchtop to size

If you'll need the stone benchtop you've ordered to be cut to size, you should definitely consider involving a remodelling contractor in this project. The reason for this is that, due to its density and weight, stone materials are much harder to cut than other materials.

You would not only need to rent or buy heavy-duty construction tools (like an angle grinder or circular saw), but you also need to know how to use these tools correctly, to ensure that you create straight lines and accurate curves or angles, that will allow the stone benchtop to fit perfectly into the area it's going to be put in. If you have no experience with these tools or with cutting dense material like stone, there is a high probability that you could accidentally cut the stone at an angle whilst trying to create a straight line (in which case the benchtop might be unusable).  As such, if don't want to ruin your expensive stone benchtop, you should get a contractor to cut this item to size for you. They'll have the correct equipment to do this job and more importantly, will have the ability to use it correctly and safely.

A Guide to Home Improvements That Suit the Whole Family

When my husband and I bought our first house, we went out of our way to find a property that was suited to young professionals such as ourselves. So when my ageing mother had to move in with us last year, we instantly knew that the house was going to need some changes to accommodate her. We had both our kitchen and our bathroom remodeled, and we couldn't be happier with the results. We were surprised to find that with some careful planning and clever design, it was possible to create living spaces that worked great for me, my husband, and my mum. I hope you'll enjoy these posts about what I learned during the process.
