2 Kitchen Remodeling Ideas to Make Your Space More Functional

Blog

When making changes to your kitchen, consider what will make the space more functional for you and your family. You don't want to end up with a custom kitchen that is beautiful but doesn't work for your needs. Here are two ideas to get you started on making your kitchen more functional.

Add More Storage

You need more storage if you're constantly searching for counter space or struggling to find a place to put all your pots and pans. Or, if you find yourself leaving things on the counter because there's nowhere else to put them, it's time to create more storage space.

One way to create more storage is by taking advantage of vertical space. Install shelves on bare walls or inside cabinets. Add hooks to the backs of doors or walls to hang things like pans, aprons, or oven mitts.

If you have a small kitchen, get creative with storage solutions. Install shelves above the sink or stove to store frequently used items. Use the space under the sink for storage baskets. Hang a pot rack from the ceiling to free up space on the stove or countertop.

Another way to create more storage is by adding an island. If you have the space, a kitchen island can provide additional counter space and storage. Look for one with built-in shelves or cabinets, or add your own custom storage to the island.

Storage isn't just about finding a place for your things. It's also about keeping things organized so you can find what you need when you need it. That's why you should consider your storage need when planning a custom kitchen. Make sure there's a place for everything and that everything has its place.

Pro-tip: Make use of the space above your cabinets. Add shelves to store things like cookbooks or serving pieces.

Improve the Lighting

If you can't see what you're doing, you're more likely to make mistakes. That's why good lighting is essential in the kitchen.

If your kitchen is dark, try adding more light. Install additional overhead lights that can be turned on and off as needed. Add under-cabinet lights to help illuminate countertops. Use task lighting over the stove or sink to make those areas easier to work in.

If you have a small kitchen, maximize the light by painting the walls and ceiling white. Use reflective surfaces, like glass or stainless steel, to help bounce light around the room.

Consider adding a skylight or solar tube to bring natural light into the space. Not only will this improve the lighting in your kitchen, but it will also make the room feel larger and more open. Don't forget about ambience lighting. String lights around the room's perimeter or add a dimmer switch to overhead lights to create a softer, more inviting space.

If you're unhappy with the lighting in your kitchen, there are ways to improve it. Consider what you need the light for and make changes accordingly.

A Guide to Home Improvements That Suit the Whole Family

When my husband and I bought our first house, we went out of our way to find a property that was suited to young professionals such as ourselves. So when my ageing mother had to move in with us last year, we instantly knew that the house was going to need some changes to accommodate her. We had both our kitchen and our bathroom remodeled, and we couldn't be happier with the results. We were surprised to find that with some careful planning and clever design, it was possible to create living spaces that worked great for me, my husband, and my mum. I hope you'll enjoy these posts about what I learned during the process.
